Wybe and Marietje Kroontje Health Care Center ranked as Montgomery County’s second largest nursing facility in the first quarter of 2026, statistics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) show.
The facility operated with 60 beds during the quarter—60 below the county’s average—and assisted an average of 51.1 residents in the period.
Kroontje received an overall CMS rating of 5 out of 5, well above Virginia’s average nursing home rating of 3.
Heritage Hall Blacksburg led the county in size, offering 179 beds in the first quarter.
Kroontje Health Care Center reported no penalties or fines as of the first quarter of 2026.
The county was home to just one non-profit nursing facility at that time.
Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the U.S. is seeing a rise in its older adult population while the younger population declines. From 2020 to 2024, the number of Americans age 65 and up grew 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The U.S. older adult demographic has surged over the last 100 years, increasing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 report estimates that about 28 million older adults—almost half this age group—may require some form of long-term support and services. The report also finds that over a third could eventually need nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an organization focused on insurance education. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
