The White squad won the Virginia Tech Spring Game presented by Eagle Construction on Apr. 18, finishing with a 30-21 victory over the Maroon team at Lane Stadium.

The game was notable as it marked head coach James Franklin’s first time coaching on Worsham Field, drawing many fans in maroon and orange to watch the event.

The Maroon team started strong, scoring first after an eight-play drive that ended with Que’Sean Brown catching a 14-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Grunkemeyer. The White team responded in the second quarter when Will Love kicked a 48-yard field goal. Veteran kicker John Love answered for Maroon with a 27-yard field goal, but Will Love added another from 44 yards to give Maroon a halftime lead of 12-7.

In the second half, the White team’s defense limited Maroon to just 220 total yards and no points. Offensively, Kelden Ryan connected with Chanz Wiggins for a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Later, Cam Sparks caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Baker to help secure the win for White.

Defensively, Jason Abbey led White with one and a half sacks out of seven total by his team. Amauri Polydor made seven tackles for White, three of them solo efforts. For Maroon, Antwone Santiago and Joshua Clarke each finished with seven tackles.

As fans look ahead to the upcoming season under new leadership, Franklin’s debut offered glimpses into both offensive potential and defensive strength.
