Virginia Tech women’s tennis secures first conference win against Florida State

The Virginia Tech Hokies women’s tennis team earned their first conference victory of the season with a 4-1 win over the Florida State Seminoles on Sunday afternoon, March 22.

This win marks an important milestone for the Hokies as they look to build momentum in conference play. The match began with No. 44 Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu claiming their fourth consecutive doubles victory, defeating Eva Shaw and Tina Li by a score of 6-1. Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura followed up with a 6-4 win over Laura Putz and Abby Kelliher, securing the doubles point for Virginia Tech.

In singles action, Mulready continued her strong performance by earning her second conference singles win of the season against Laura Putz, finishing 6-1, 6-0. Uslu added another point for the Hokies with a straight-set victory over Eva Shaw, winning 6-4, 6-4. Ziets-Segura clinched the overall match for Virginia Tech by defeating Lauren Anderson on Court 6 with scores of 6-2, 7-5.

Freshman Alston Myatt was defeated in straight sets by Florida State’s Cade Cricchio. At the time the match was called, Elizaveta Castillo was leading her opponent 6-4, 5-4, while Gamretkaia was attempting to force a third set.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will return to Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center to face No. 6 North Carolina on Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m.
