The Virginia Tech Hokies women’s tennis team lost 4-0 to No. 5 North Carolina on March 27 in Blacksburg.

The match marked the Hokies’ first home appearance since February, as they hosted one of the nation’s top-ranked teams at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

In doubles play, Elizaveta Castillo and Alston Myatt were defeated 6-1 by North Carolina’s Evans and Frey. On Court 1, Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu, ranked No. 44 nationally, narrowly lost to the Tar Heels’ Brantmeier and Hamilton, who are ranked No. 5, with a score of 6-4. Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura had their match against Maltby and Zampardo left unfinished at a tied score of 5-5 after North Carolina clinched the doubles point.

Adjustments in singles saw Virginia Tech pull its Court 3 player for the second half of the match, which moved other players up in the lineup and led to a forfeit on Court 6 due to an unavailable athlete. Myatt and Ziets-Segura both lost their singles matches in two sets each, sealing North Carolina’s victory. The remaining three Hokies continued competing against ranked opponents when play concluded.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will host No. 24 Duke on Sunday, March 29 at noon for “Kids at the Court Day,” which will include activities such as a bouncehouse.
