Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse lost to the twelfth-ranked Duke Blue Devils, 15-9, on March 21.

The game began with Duke scoring four unanswered goals before Virginia Tech responded. A yellow card was called on Duke after an illegal stick was found following a free position goal, which was overturned. Virginia Tech took advantage of the man-up situation as Reese Wallich and Mia Pozzi scored the team’s first two goals.

In the second quarter, Wallich added another goal while Lauren Render and Cassandra Montgomery each scored one, bringing the halftime score to 7-5 in favor of Duke. Early in the second half, goals from Render and Sophia Trahan tied the game at seven. However, Duke forced three turnovers and went on a four-goal run in the third quarter that put them ahead for good.

Wallich completed her hat trick in the fourth quarter and Sarah Murrell also scored for Virginia Tech, but these efforts were not enough to overcome Duke’s lead. Goalkeeper Malie Follet recorded nine saves during the match.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will travel to face tenth-ranked Clemson Tigers on Saturday, March 28. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start with coverage available through ACCNX.
