Virginia Tech secured a 2-1 victory over NC State on March 22, completing a series sweep at Tech Softball Park.
The win is significant as it marks the Hokies’ first Atlantic Coast Conference sweep of the season and improves their conference record to 4-2. The game was tied at one run each going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Michelle Chatfield delivered a walk-off single to left field, bringing home Sara McNelly for the winning run.
The Hokies took an early lead in the second inning when Nora Abromavage hit a solo home run to left center. NC State responded in the third inning, capitalizing on two Virginia Tech throwing errors to tie the game. Despite loading the bases in the fourth inning, Virginia Tech was unable to score.
In the decisive seventh inning, Rachel Castine led off with a single, followed by Annika Rohs advancing pinch runner McNelly with a sacrifice bunt. After Addison Foster grounded out and Jordan Lynch drew a walk, Chatfield’s single ended the game. Emma Mazzarone started for Virginia Tech and struck out nine batters over six innings while allowing only two hits. Bree Carrico entered in relief during the seventh and recorded two outs, earning her eighth win of the season without a loss.
Additional notes from the game include Abromavage hitting her ninth home run of the year and Virginia Tech improving its all-time record against NC State to 32-23. The team also remains undefeated at home this season with three wins at Tech Softball Park.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will continue its conference schedule with a series against Boston College from March 27-29 in Brighton, Massachusetts. All games are scheduled to be televised on ACC Network Extra.
