The Virginia Tech baseball team lost to No. 23 Boston College, 6-2, during their Atlantic Coast Conference rubber match on April 12 at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Harrington Athletics Village.
This result puts Virginia Tech at a record of 16-18 overall and 7-11 in the ACC, while Boston College improves to 26-12 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
Senior catcher Henry Cooke led the Hokies offensively by going two-for-four with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Despite narrowing the Eagles’ lead to four runs, Cooke’s homer was one of only two hits for Virginia Tech after that point as both teams finished without scoring again.
Boston College scored six runs over its first three innings against Virginia Tech right-hander Griffin Stieg, who allowed eight hits through his second shortest start of the season. Aiden Robertson came on in relief for the Hokies and pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and three hits allowed.
Four of Virginia Tech’s six total hits came from players batting seventh or lower: Owen Petrich doubled for a third straight game; Ethan Gibson extended his hitting streak to five games; Sam Gates went two-for-four with an RBI single that put the Hokies on the scoreboard during a fourth-inning rally. The Hokies loaded the bases early but were held scoreless after Sam Grube grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Boston College’s offense was paced by Jack Toomey’s RBI double and Carter Hendrickson’s groundout RBI in the first inning, followed by Julio Solier’s run-scoring single in the second and Gunnar Johnson’s two-RBI double in the third. Starting pitcher Tyler Mudd worked seven innings for Boston College, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four batters before Kyle Kipp closed out with six consecutive outs.
Virginia Tech is scheduled to return home to English Field on Tuesday, April 14, where they will host Radford with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
