Virginia Tech lacrosse falls to No. 13 Notre Dame, moves to 8-7 overall

Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse lost to the thirteenth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 13-9, on April 4. The defeat puts the Hokies at an overall record of 8-7 and a conference record of 2-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The match saw Virginia Tech’s offense struggle early, remaining scoreless for over thirteen minutes until sophomore Sarah Murrell scored the team’s first goal. Catherine Karman added another goal less than a minute into the second quarter. Lauren Render then scored with five minutes left in the half after receiving a pass from Ally Phalines, but Virginia Tech trailed Notre Dame by seven goals at halftime with a score of 10-3.

In the third quarter and into the final period, Virginia Tech gained momentum. Render led this effort by scoring two more goals for her fifth hat trick of the season. Murrell also completed a hat trick by scoring twice in the last quarter. Mia Pozzi and Cassandra Montgomery each contributed one goal as well, bringing Virginia Tech’s total to nine goals.

Goalkeeper Malie Follet made a career-high fourteen saves during the game. This marks her fifth game this season with ten or more saves.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will travel to California for their final road trip of the regular season where they will face off against the California Golden Bears on Saturday, April 11 at 6 p.m., with coverage available through ACCNX.
