Virginia Tech lost to Stanford, 6-3, in a ten-inning game on March 29 during the final matchup of their three-game series at English Field.
The close contest remained tied at 3-3 after five innings, but Virginia Tech was unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. The loss leaves both teams with identical records of 13-13 for the season.
Griffin Stieg started for Virginia Tech and pitched six innings, allowing three runs and seven hits while striking out three batters. Despite facing pressure early from Stanford’s offense, Stieg stranded six runners on base. Sam Grube led off for the Hokies with a bunt single and eventually scored after an errant throw by Stanford’s catcher Luke Lavin was confirmed through video review. Nick Locurto and Sam Gates also contributed offensively for Virginia Tech.
Stanford’s Teddy Tokheim and Charlie Bates were key contributors; Tokheim doubled early and scored on Bates’ RBI single in the first inning. Bates finished with three hits and two runs batted in. In extra innings, Brock Sell hit a ground-rule double before Tokheim drove in two runs with a single, followed by another RBI from Bates that extended Stanford’s lead.
Virginia Tech struggled offensively with runners on base, going just 3-for-22 in those situations and leaving a season-high seventeen runners stranded throughout the game. The Hokies left the bases loaded twice late in the game but could not break through against Stanford’s bullpen.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech is scheduled to play Radford at Williams Field at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, March 31.
