The Virginia Tech baseball team lost to Cal Poly, 6-2, during the opening game of the 2026 NCAA Los Angeles Regional at Jackie Robinson Stadium on May 30. The defeat moved Virginia Tech (30-25) into the region’s elimination bracket, where they will face top-seeded UCLA in Game 3 on Saturday.
Junior infielder Pete Daniel led Virginia Tech offensively by going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. The Hokies managed six hits, their second lowest total over their recent 21-game stretch. Hudson Lutterman and Ethan Ball also doubled for Virginia Tech, but the team batted just 2-for-14 with runners on base and left eight runners stranded.
Starting pitcher Logan Eisenreich gave Virginia Tech three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs across three scoring innings while giving up seven hits. Eisenreich recorded five strikeouts but tied his career highs in both walks (four) and hit batsmen (two).
Cal Poly (37-22) began scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning. The Mustangs loaded the bases with one out before Eisenreich struck out Dylan Kordic and Ryan Tayman to end the threat. Jake Downing started that inning with a leadoff double as part of a four-hit frame that included an RBI groundout by Gavin Spiridonoff and an RBI single from Dante Vachini.
The winner of Saturday’s elimination game between Virginia Tech and UCLA will advance to play again on Sunday, while the losing side will be eliminated from championship contention.
