No. 10 Virginia Tech defeated Georgia Tech 10-2 on April 17 in the opening game of their softball series at Tech Softball Park.
The win puts Virginia Tech at a record of 38-6 overall and 12-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Georgia Tech falls to 27-23 overall and 8-11 in the conference. The game ended after six innings due to the run-rule, following a home run by Jordan Lynch.
Georgia Tech took an early lead in the first inning, but Virginia Tech quickly responded with a three-run homer from Kylie Aldridge. In the third inning, Zoe Yaeger hit a double that brought home two runners, followed by another run scored on an error and an RBI single from Rachel Castine, resulting in four more runs for Virginia Tech.
Georgia Tech managed to score again in the sixth inning to make it 7-2. However, Emma Mazzarone helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly before Addison Foster’s double set up Lynch’s walk-off home run. Mazzarone pitched a complete game for her eleventh win of the season, recording five strikeouts and allowing just four hits over six innings.
Game notes indicate that Virginia Tech has now won ten or more runs sixteen times this year and has outhit its opponents in forty-one out of forty-four games. Lynch leads the team with fourteen home runs this season while both she and Foster have achieved twenty-two multi-hit games each. Foster also leads ACC play for Virginia Tech with a .460 batting average. Aldridge hit her seventh home run of the year during this match and has reached base in twenty-seven consecutive games.
Virginia Tech will continue its series against Georgia Tech on Saturday, April 18 at 7 p.m., with coverage scheduled on ACC Network.
