The Virginia Tech baseball team lost to Liberty, 11-4, on April 7 after taking an early lead during their game at English Field.
The loss came despite a strong start by the Hokies, who scored three runs in the first inning. The result puts Virginia Tech at a record of 15-16 for the season and highlights challenges with bullpen depth and defensive execution.
Junior left fielder Nick Locurto extended his hitting streak to eight games and reached base for the thirteenth consecutive contest. Locurto’s leadoff single sparked a three-run rally that gave Virginia Tech an initial advantage. The team also saw the return of pitcher Madden Clement, making his first appearance since sustaining an injury in February 2025. Clement faced five batters before being relieved by Chase Swift, who pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings.
Liberty responded with a six-run fourth inning that shifted momentum in their favor. Key plays included Tanner Marsh’s ground-rule double and Riley DeCandido’s two-RBI single, which put Liberty ahead for good. Additional doubles from Jordan Jaffe and Nick Barone helped extend Liberty’s lead as they capitalized on walks issued by Hokies pitchers.
Owen Petrich drove in another run for Virginia Tech in the fourth inning but was thrown out at first base after confusion on the bases stalled further scoring opportunities. Afterward, Liberty continued to build its lead through big hits and free passes.
Tanner Marsh led Liberty offensively with three hits, four runs scored, and three RBIs while Nick Barone contributed four RBIs. On the mound, Virginia Tech pitchers allowed more walks than hits given up during the game.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will travel to New England this weekend for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series against Boston College. Friday’s opener is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday’s ALS Awareness Game will be played at Fenway Park at 2 p.m., and Sunday’s finale is set for 1 p.m.
