The Virginia Tech baseball team was selected on May 25 to compete in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, earning an at-large berth into the 2026 tournament based on its regular season performance.

Virginia Tech, with a record of 30-24, was named the No. 2 seed in the Los Angeles Regional hosted by top-seeded UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium from May 29 to June 1. The Hokies will open play against third-seeded Cal Poly, with fourth-seeded Saint Mary’s also participating in the bracket. Game times and broadcast details will be announced later this week.

This marks head coach John Szefc’s ninth career NCAA tournament appearance and his second trip to the national championship field with Virginia Tech in five seasons. Szefc previously led Maryland to Super Regionals in 2014 and 2015 before guiding Virginia Tech as a No. 4 national seed in 2022. He is seeking his first appearance in the Men’s College World Series.

As of May 24, Virginia Tech ranked No. 17 nationally in strength of schedule, No. 25 in Diamond Sports Ranking provided by D1Baseball, and No. 42 in NCAA Division I Baseball RPI, according to college baseball publications that regarded these metrics as sufficient for one of the tournament’s at-large bids.

Virginia Tech finished seventh overall in ACC standings for the year and secured a first-round bye during last week’s conference championship at Truist Field. In their opening game against Notre Dame, they recorded season highs for hits (19), runs (17), and RBIs (16) en route to a quarterfinal appearance among eight remaining teams.

The Hokies enter postseason play having won fourteen of their last twenty games since April 14—starting with a combined no-hitter against Radford—and are led by All-ACC Second Team pitcher Brett Renfrow along with infielder Ethan Ball and junior infielder Ethan Gibson on offense.
