Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced on June 1 the addition of Ty Walz as assistant coach, completing the Hokies’ coaching staff ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
Walz returns to his alma mater after spending three years in Providence, Rhode Island, where he contributed to the recruitment and development of Andrew Reall and Alex Semeneko. Under Walz’s guidance, Reall achieved an Ivy League Conference title, reached the NCAA Championship Round of 12 in 2026, and tied a program-best season record with 37 wins and six losses. Semeneko also saw success during this period, making an Ivy League finals appearance, earning a berth at the NCAA Championships, and finishing twice in the top ten for pinfalls across the NCAA.
Before his time in Providence, Walz served on staff at Virginia Tech for three seasons. During that tenure, he played a role in guiding Jared Haught to an NCAA finals appearance—the second finalist in program history—and helped develop Zack Zavatsky into a two-time All-American and three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion.
As an athlete at Virginia Tech, Walz became the only three-time heavyweight All-American for the Hokies while also securing an individual ACC title. He was part of Virginia Tech’s only trophy team with a fourth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships and was recognized as Hokies Wrestling’s first world medalist after earning bronze at the 2018 U23 World Championships.
Walz is returning to Blacksburg with his wife, Deej, and their two daughters.
