Patriots Blanked in Series Finale at No. 10 East Carolina

The George Mason baseball team fell to No. 10 East Carolina in the series finale, 5-0, on Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C.

The game was delayed by rain and then stopped in the eighth inning.  The Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the series while the Patriots dropped their fourth straight game.

Mason (11-12) fell behind ECU (19-5) in the second inning when Pirates junior shortstop Joey Berini hit a solo home run off Patriots sophomore starter Konner Eaton.

ECU plated a run on a RBI-single and another on a ground out in the home half of the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batter and scored a run against Mason junior reliever Christian Mracna to make it 4-0.

ECU junior first baseman Josh Moylan hit a solo home run in the seventh to account for the 5-0 final score.

Pirates junior starter Josh Grosz scattered five singles and allowed just six total base runners in the complete-game victory.

For the Patriots, Eaton (1-1) allowed three runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings and took the loss.  Mracna gave up a pair of runs on three hits in 2.0 innings.

For the Pirates, Grosz (4-0) tossed 8.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts for the complete-game win.

Mason senior third baseman South Trimble went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

The Patriots are back on the diamond against Longwood on Wednesday with the first pitch schedule for 6 p.m. at Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville, Va.
