Remember that February is Financial Aid Awareness Month

February is Financial Aid Awareness Month, and the University Scholarships and Financial Aid team is using this time to educate students and families about important steps to access federal, state, and institutional aid. The aim is to ensure all students take advantage of opportunities to reduce the costs associated with obtaining a college degree.

The mission starts with encouraging all prospective and current students to apply for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA determines eligibility for grants, work study, federal loans, and many scholarships. Virginia Tech’s priority deadline for completing the FAFSA is March 1 for the 2023-24 academic year. Current students are being reminded that a FAFSA must be completed each year.

“We recognize the role that financial aid plays for students and their families when figuring out how to pay for college, and we want to reduce the stress that comes with this process by providing support where we can,” said Beth Armstrong, associate vice provost for enrollment management and director of student financial aid.

The University Scholarships and Financial Aid website provides a wealth of resources, including a how to apply for aid section and a list of documents needed to complete the FAFSA. The office also is sharing tips and information its Facebook and Instagram pages.

In addition to providing information for students and parents, University Scholarships and Financial Aid representatives are hosting virtual Financial Aid Awareness sessions for student academic advisors.

Upcoming sessions are as follows:

  • Thursday, Feb. 16: You Down with S-A-P? Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Basics and Appeal for Advisors
  • Thursday, Feb. 23: Come Sail Away – Don’t Let the Scholar-ship Leave You Behind: Getting and Keeping Virginia Tech Scholarships
  • Thursday, March 2: Federal Work Study (for hiring managers and those who may want to hire a federal work study student)
Sessions begin at 4 p.m. and will be recorded for advisors who cannot attend. Register online.
