NEWS IN BRIEF: ‘JEOPARDY!’ TAKE TWO: DOCTORAL STUDENT SCORES SECOND WIN

Lloyd Sy tried out for “Jeopardy!” hoping to supplement his income as a doctoral student at the University of Virginia and so far, his plan is working beautifully.

Sy bagged his second win on the quiz show Wednesday, bringing his total earnings to $53,578.

The final “Jeopardy!” clue was this: Until a 1903 secession, this country’s contiguous territory spanned two continents. The correct response – by the show’s rules, phrased as a question – was “What is Colombia?” and Sy was the only contestant to guess correctly.

That means fans will get another chance to watch the scholar compete Thursday.

“My experiences teaching and studying at UVA have helped prepare me immensely for this appearance, and I’m so lucky to be part of a caring and supportive community of students,” he said. “I hope after a difficult year this gives UVA students something to cheer on!”

UVA Health Nets Grant To Fight Infections

UVA Health has received $1.2 million in state and federal grants to reduce infections in Virginia’s long-term care facilities. The grant will create an online resource of best practices for infection control and prevention at nursing homes and similar facilities.

“Our goal is to establish a trusted one-stop shop for long-term care facilities to help them protect their patients and staff,” said UVA Health geriatrician Dr. Laurie R. Archbald-Pannone, the program’s lead physician.

The program will utilize the experience and expertise UVA brought to bear in controlling COVID-19 infections in hospital settings.
