Patricia Amateis honored with emerita status
Patricia Amateis, associate professor of chemistry in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of associate professor emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
The emerita title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1985, Amateis made significant contributions to chemistry education as the co-author of a general chemistry textbook – Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Martin S. Silberberg and Patricia G. Amateis, McGraw-Hill, publisher -- used at many colleges and universities.
At Virginia Tech, she taught General Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry to thousands of undergraduate students. She also started the General Chemistry Recitation/Studio program, co-authored the laboratory manual for General Chemistry, and developed a new chemistry course. She also served as the orientation advisor and freshman advisor in the Department of Chemistry for more than two decades.
Amateis served as director of general chemistry for more than 20 years and director of undergraduate Programs for five years. She was a member of the University Honors Program staff for several years and was a Senior Fellow in the Honors Residential Commons.
She was also deeply engaged in community science outreach and gave numerous chemistry presentations at area elementary, middle, and high school schools.
During her career at Virginia Tech, Amateis was honored with the University Sporn Award in 1994, the Alumni Award for Teaching Excellence in 2002, the William E. Wine Teaching Award in 2010, the Department of Chemistry’s Jimmy W. Viers Teaching Award, and for many years was named an Office of Residence Life Student Program Division’s Favorite Faculty.
Amateis earned her bachelor’s degree from Concord College and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.
