City of Blacksburg issued the following announcement on Oct. 27
The Town of Blacksburg has recently repaved Progress Street, from North Main Street to Patrick Henry Drive. This type of maintenance project can present an opportunity to improve safety for all modes. The Town is proposing to add bicycle infrastructure to this highly traveled route.
The proposal includes a bicycle lane (on the side with even numbered addresses), and sharrows (on the side with odd addresses), from North Main Street to Broce Drive, as well as bicycle lanes on both sides, from Broce Drive to Patrick Henry Drive. To make these safety improvements, parking is proposed to be removed from the side of the street with even addresses. Parking will remain on the side of the street with odd addresses, from North Main Street to Broce Drive.
This project was identified by the 2015 Bicycle Master Plan and is supported by the 2021 Comprehensive Plan. Both plans look for opportunities to improve infrastructure for bicyclists. The project helps separate people riding bicycles, from faster-moving vehicular traffic, which can reduce conflicts and improve safety. Additionally, the removal of on-street parking spaces helps reduce conflicts with Blacksburg Transit at and around bus stops.
