Assisting and Serving at the Muddy Acce Race

27

Town of Glen Lyn issued the following announcement on July 22

Preparations are well underway for the 2021 Muddy ACCE Race and those beneficiaries of the event, the ACCE Students, wanted to introduce themselves to you. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight a few of these ACCE students. ACCE stands for Access to Community College Education and is a program designed to provide tuition scholarships to New River Community College to Giles County graduates. The Muddy ACCE Race is a primary fundraiser to support the program. Up first is Maggie Long, a recent graduate of Giles High School and current volunteer with the Tourism Marketing Office of Giles County. All ACCE students have volunteer hour requirements as part of their successful enrollment in the program.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about yourself. A: I’m Maggie Long and I graduated Giles High School in 2021. I am going to attend New River Community College for general studies through the ACCE program. After which, I plan on transferring to Radford University to major either in nursing or criminal justice. I’m undecided on which one I want to study at the moment.

Q: How did you participate in the ACCE Program? A: I am a student who will be assisting and serving those that are running the day of the race. I have seen the benefits of the ACCE program because I had a family member previously participate.

Q: Why did you get involved with the Muddy ACCE Race? A: Community service is one of the requirements for receiving ACCE funding, and twenty of those hours were completed by assisting with the Muddy ACCE Race. For the Muddy ACCE Race, on October 2, I’m most looking forward to seeing and thanking all those community members who also support ACCE.

Q: What is the one thing you’ll take away from the ACCE program or MAR event? A: Not only do I get two free years of college, but I also get to help my community by performing community service.

Q: If you could share a sentiment to those considering the program, perhaps as a student or parent, or considering running in the 2021 event- what would you tell them? A: The ACCE program has made a huge difference in my family’s and my life. You not only get two years of free college, but you also get to meet new people from your community. I’ve reassured a lot of financial stress by taking part in the ACCE program.
