Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the older adult population in the country is growing while younger cohorts are decreasing. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and above rose by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decline in those under 18. The nation’s older adult population has expanded significantly over the last 100 years, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

Findings from a 2021 study note that almost half of individuals in this age group—about 28 million—are likely to need long-term services and supports. The report also estimates that more than one-third may eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an education group focused on insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
