The Virginia Tech track and field team finished the opening weekend of the outdoor season with two athletes entering the program’s all-time top 10 lists and eight podium finishes at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, according to a March 21 announcement.
The results mark a strong start for Virginia Tech as they begin their outdoor campaign. Achievements included first-place finishes, personal bests, and new entries into school record books.
On the second day of competition, Zoey McFadyen won her first collegiate event in the women’s 400 meters with a time of 54.52 seconds. Farah Nasir followed in second place at 55.39 seconds. In the men’s 400 meters, Elijah Mosley secured victory with a time of 46.46 seconds, earning him eighth place on Virginia Tech’s all-time list for that event. Mosley also holds tenth place on the indoor top ten list for the same distance. Armaan Dhillon joined him on the podium by finishing third with a personal best of 48.72 seconds.
In other events, Nabil Tezkratt won the men’s 200 meters in 21.05 seconds while Calvin Meyer placed third at 21.16 seconds. Denzs Simmonds took first place in men’s shot put with a throw of 17.22 meters (56’6”), which puts him ninth on Virginia Tech’s outdoor top ten list; he is also seventh on the indoor list for shot put.
Katrin Brzyszkowska captured first place in women’s shot put with a mark of 16.79 meters (55’1”). Other notable performances included Mariana Pestana winning women’s hammer throw and Yekini Bowen taking first in men’s discus, where Bowen moved to fourth all-time for Virginia Tech.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will split its squad next week to compete at both the Raleigh Relays from March 26–28 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Terry Long Florida State Relays from March 26–27 in Tallahassee, Florida.
