Hokies men’s tennis falls 4-3 to No. 59 Louisville in close match

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s tennis team lost a narrow contest to No. 59 Louisville, falling 4-3 on Friday night, April 3.

The match was closely contested throughout, with the Hokies initially gaining momentum by securing the doubles point. Drew Fishback and Frank Thompson won their doubles match 6-1, marking their third consecutive win and sixth Atlantic Coast Conference doubles victory as a pair this season. On Court No. 1, Blake Hilton and Eyal Shumilov earned a 6-2 win for their fifth conference doubles victory of the year, clinching the opening point for Virginia Tech.

In singles play, competition remained tight as four out of six matches extended to three sets and two others were decided by tiebreakers. Patrik Jurina contributed a straight-set win (7-6 [7-5], 6-4) for the Hokies’ second point. Senior Julian Lozano then gave Virginia Tech an advantage with his own victory (7-5, 7-6 [7-4]) on Court No. 5 before Louisville evened the score at three points each.

The outcome came down to Court No. 3 in a decisive third set where Louisville secured the final point needed for victory.

Virginia Tech will continue its home stand against No. 17 Notre Dame on Sunday at noon.
