The Virginia Tech Hokies women’s tennis team defeated Louisville 4-2 in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship on April 14.

This win allows the Hokies to advance to the second round of the tournament, where they will face Stanford. The match took place Tuesday morning in Cary, North Carolina.

The Hokies began strong with a doubles victory from Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu on Court 1, winning against Berta Miret and Elena Noguero by a score of 6-2. On Court 3, freshmen Elizaveta Castillo and Alston Myatt secured another doubles point after coming back from behind in a tiebreaker to win 13-11.

In singles play, Linda Ziets-Segura gave Virginia Tech its second point by defeating Rebekkah Gaines with sets of 6-3, 6-3. After Louisville won on Court 3, Uslu added another point for the Hokies by reversing an early set loss to beat Alice Otis in three sets: losing the first set but taking the next two decisively. Louisville responded with a win over Myatt on Court 5 after three sets.

Gamretkaia clinched victory for Virginia Tech on Court 2 by overcoming deficits in both sets before winning two close tiebreakers against Germany Davis. Castillo’s match was left unfinished as she led her third set when play concluded.

Virginia Tech is scheduled to compete against Stanford in the second round of the ACC Championship at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
