The Virginia Tech baseball team secured a 6-3 victory against No. 14 Virginia on March 15, powered by Griffin Stieg’s six-inning start at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville.
This win allowed the Hokies (9-9, 2-4 ACC) to close out a challenging stretch of games, many of which were played on the road or at neutral sites against top-ranked opponents. Since Feb. 27, nine of their last ten games have been away from home and included matchups with several top-25 teams.
Stieg delivered a strong performance, holding the Cavaliers scoreless until the fifth inning and finishing with seven strikeouts, three hits allowed, and one run over 104 pitches. His outing marked his first winning decision since March 2024 and was also the first win by a Hokies starting pitcher this season.
Offensively, Hudson Lutterman hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning to give Virginia Tech an early lead. The Hokies added runs through an RBI double by Sam Grube and other contributions in the fifth inning. Relief pitchers Luke Craytor and Brody Roe helped maintain the lead before Preston Crowl closed out the game with four consecutive strikeouts for his second straight save in an Atlantic Coast Conference series finale.
Virginia Tech’s pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts—their highest total since Feb. 21 against Rutgers—and limited Virginia to five hits, their fewest allowed against the Cavaliers since May 2021.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will return home after playing most recent games on the road. The team is set to host VCU at English Field on Tuesday, March 17.
