Georgia Tech secured a 14-5 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. The victory gave the No. 5 Yellow Jackets a series lead against the Hokies, who have now lost six straight games, including five to ranked teams.

Virginia Tech (7-7, 0-2 ACC) started slowly but found momentum in the fifth inning after Henry Cooke hit a home run, cutting Georgia Tech’s early lead to 2-1. The Hokies then rallied with a string of hits from Ethan Gibson, Treyson Hughes, Ethan Ball, and Sam Grube, eventually taking their first lead of the series at 3-2. Hudson Lutterman’s RBI double extended that advantage to 5-2.

However, Georgia Tech (14-1, 2-0 ACC) responded quickly in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vahn Lackey hit a two-RBI double and later scored on Ryan Zuckerman’s sacrifice fly to tie the game at five runs apiece.

Virginia Tech had opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings but left runners in scoring position both times. In response, Georgia Tech capitalized during its half of the seventh inning by hitting four home runs within five plate appearances and posting its second eight-run inning of the series.

Hughes, Ball, Cooke and Gibson each recorded multiple hits for Virginia Tech. Schmidt led Georgia Tech with four hits in as many at-bats. Caleb Daniel contributed two home runs for the Yellow Jackets while Lackey went three-for-four with five RBIs.

The series will conclude Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET between Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.
