Drew Fishback won the UTR Pro Summer Slam at Madison with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the final round, according to a May 23 announcement. The win qualifies the Virginia Tech Hokies men’s tennis player for the UTR Pro Summer Slam Championship scheduled to take place in Tallahassee, Florida from August 11 to August 15.
Fishback advanced to the final after defeating Oscar Corwin of Western Michigan University in the semifinals with two tiebreakers, winning 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4). In Saturday morning’s championship match, Fishback secured another straight-set win over North Alabama’s Alberto Altur Fernandez. This was his second victory over a North Alabama opponent this month, following his contribution to Virginia Tech’s NIT Championship win against the Lions on May 8.
During his freshman season, Fishback posted a singles record of 12 wins and 13 losses and a doubles record of 17 wins and 16 losses. He ended his first year with a notable singles victory—6-4, 6-3—in Virginia Tech’s team win over North Alabama.
The results highlight Fishback’s continued success as he moves into his sophomore year and prepares for further competition at national tournaments.
