Emily Mathews, a junior at Virginia Tech, shared her experiences and achievements in collegiate golf in a statement released on March 31. Mathews, who grew up in El Paso, Texas before moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, said that golf has always been more than just a pastime for her.
Mathews explained that her passion for the sport was inspired by following her older brother Nick Mathews—now a professional golfer—on the course. “When I was little, I just wanted to do whatever he did… but as I got older, I kind of started playing for myself,” she said.
After high school and receiving multiple offers from universities including Auburn and Miami, Mathews chose Virginia Tech because she felt valued during recruitment. “I think the coaches did an amazing job of making me feel like I was a priority when I was getting recruited,” she said. She added that visiting the campus solidified her decision: “A lot of people… told me I’d know when it’s the right school. And after visiting Tech… Immediately, I took the offer a few days later.”
Now an established member of the Hokies’ lineup and recognized as a Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar, Mathews currently ranks second on her team with a scoring average of 72.13 over eight events this season. She won the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate tournament and helped lead Virginia Tech to its team title. Her favorite accomplishments include earning her first individual win and shooting three rounds in the 60s this season.
Mathews credits much of her growth to support from teammates: “We’ve watched each other struggle… being able to learn from each other’s mistakes and our successes is huge.” She also emphasized encouraging young girls in sports: “Even if our viewership isn’t as high… know that you hold a lot of importance for the sport and for upcoming players… So just keep pushing and putting a good image out there for the upcoming generation.”
As she continues competing with Virginia Tech’s women’s golf team, Mathews aims not only to excel on the course but also inspire future generations.
