Bree Carrico has been named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 10 Freshman of the Year finalist, according to a May 7 announcement.
Carrico’s selection highlights her strong performance throughout the season for the Virginia Tech Hokies softball team. The recognition places her among the top freshman players in collegiate softball this year.
Carrico, a redshirt-freshman, leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 1.72 earned run average and ranks seventeenth nationally. She has pitched over 101 innings, recording 117 strikeouts and allowing only 25 earned runs in thirty appearances. Her record stands at thirteen wins and one loss with five saves for her team.
Earlier in the season, Carrico received both NFCA Freshman of the Week and ACC Player of the Week honors after pitching eleven scoreless innings against Longwood and North Carolina State University. During that stretch, she struck out sixteen batters and limited opponents to a .029 batting average. She has twice recorded ten strikeouts in a single game this season.
On May 5, Carrico was named ACC Freshman of the Year following her conference play performance where she posted a conference ERA of 1.93—third among pitchers—and achieved six wins against one loss with forty-nine strikeouts over fifty innings while allowing fourteen earned runs.
Carrico is Virginia Tech’s first NFCA Top 10 Freshman of the Year finalist since Emma Lemley was recognized in 2023. The Hokies have secured the third seed in this year’s ACC Softball Championship at Palmer Park in Charlottesville from May 6-9. They will face sixth-seeded Virginia on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with coverage available on ACC Network.
