Montgomery County Public Schools received a generous endowment to introduce the game of golf to students of all ages. MPCS received $1 million in honor of Juanita W. Petrone, from the estate of her son Ralph W. Petrone.

Juanita Petrone was an avid golf player and lover of the game. She played golf locally and across the east coast and was passionate about helping kids learn to play golf. Ralph Petrone graduated from Blacksburg High School and taught at Christiansburg High School. Their combined experiences led to the creation of the endowment in support of MCPS and golf programs.

“This endowment will benefit MCPS students for generations to come,” said Mark Husband, head of the Petrone Foundation Steering Committee and director of career and technical education for MPCS. “Golf is a sport that teaches many life lessons, and we are excited to introduce it to our students early in their lives.”

MCPS has purchased golf equipment to be used by students as young as five, including putters, pins, balls, and tees. The Petrone Foundation Steering Committee, which includes teachers, coaches, and golf professionals, will continue to work with MCPS to determine the expansion of the golf program.
